A parking garage was being built here in 1993 when workers found Byzantine floor mosaics so fine they were mistaken for textile rugs. The parking garage never happened. The mosaics are still here.

Justinian never visited Ravenna. He put his face on the wall anyway. Theodora went from the lowest tier of Byzantine society to empress. Her mosaic gaze has been following visitors for 1,500 years. UNESCO site.

From outside, it looks like nothing. Inside, a deep blue starlit dome and golden mosaics over 1,500 years old wait in the dark. Galla Placidia designed the light herself. It still works. UNESCO site.
